Data Collection - RF Scanners

The Problem

A large manufacturer of automated equipment was looking for a scanner capable of decoding data stored in a 2D bar code symbology and send the decoded to their in-house server for tracking. The scanner has to be completely wireless since the scanner would be mobile and the data was required to be collected in a real-time manner.

The Solution

Dynamic Bar Code Systems selected a PowerScan RF industrial bar code scanner from PSC to the equipment manufacture for integration into their equipment. As the part being manufactured proceeds down an assembly line, the part is scanned at different points and the data is decoded and transmitted to a PowerScan RF Base Station at 915mHZ. The base station is connected to the main server’s RS232 serial port. Once the item and the location of the item have been identified by the server, a record is stored on the mainframe. Since the parts being manufactured are sued in the automotive industry, accurate tracking information is vital in case of future problems or mistakes with the manufactured parts.

The Benefit

Before the automated system was put in place, an operator had to manually scan each item with a scanner connected to a computer terminal before packing the item in a carton for shipping. Each night, the computer terminal would transfer the data to the mainframe computer using a batch process. Now with real-time data, the company has the ability to track the progress of each part, plus maintain accurate and detailed records on each individual part and exactly what components went into the assembly of the part. Plus having the scanners in place also allows for projected future expansion of an automated conveyor line automatically routing each part through the process based on the part scanned.
