Label Print-Apply - PLC Integration

The Problem
A large automotive parts manufacturer of ABS brake control systems had a requirement for a printer applicator system that could apply a barcoded serialized polyimide label that was 8mm in height to plastic housings at a rate of 20 boxes per minute.  The printer applicator system would have to be controlled by a PLC and receive variable data for each label printed. 

The Solution
Dynamic Bar Code Systems selected the Tharo PA1200t with the Specialty Tamp option for small labels along with the Tharo H434 label printer.  The PLC controlled the data the Tharo H434 printed and sent the start signal for the printer applicator to print and apply the unique barcoded serialized label.  After the PLC received the 'label printed' command, the automation continued as the printed barcode label was verified and moved to the next work cell.

The Benefit
Automation has always been a key factor in keeping the overall cost of parts manufacturing competitive.  The time and expense required to consistently place the small preprinted serialized bar code label by hand was not an option for this parts manufacturer.  With the automation is place the company has been able to keep production of the part in North America.  As automotive part prices continue to fall due to outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries, automatically printing and applying the label to parts, corrugated boxes, pallets and even shipping containers, is one process that will help keep the costs of manufacturing competitive.
